Ingredients

  • 1 medium head cabbage, shredded
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let stand for 5 minutes.
  2. Add flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  5. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in large skillet over medium heat.
  6. Add onion and cook until softened.
  7. Add garlic, cabbage, caraway seeds, and black pepper.
  8. Cook for 15 minutes until cabbage is tender and liquid is evaporated.
  9. Stir in fresh dill and let cool.
  10. Punch down dough and roll into a large rectangle.
  11. Spread cabbage mixture over dough and roll up tightly.
  12. Place seam side down on greased baking sheet.
  13. Brush with beaten egg and let rise for 30 minutes.
  14. Bake at 375°F for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  15. Brush with melted butter while warm.
