Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons ham drippings or butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup ham broth or chicken broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 cup diced ham (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat ham drippings in a medium saucepan over medium heat
  2. Whisk in flour and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly
  3. Gradually add milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps
  4. Add ham broth and continue whisking until smooth
  5. Season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and thyme
  6. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low
  7. Simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until thickened
  8. Add diced ham if using
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed
  10. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, biscuits, or ham slices
